WEDNESDAY AUGUST 18 2010,
At the top of this trip blog I listed the things I hoped to do before returning home. These were motobiking, bicycling, kayaking, flying, fishing, golfing, hiking, and camping. So far I'm doing ok with the list. Did some motorcycling in Oregon and last weekend Dean and I rode our motorcycles up to the Olympic National Forest and did a fairly rigorous hike. The trail switchbacked up at a 20% grade for a couple miles. That was enough to test out some muscles I haven't used for some time. Last week I kayaked around Port Ludlow with Delee and Allen (my neice and her husband). I have also been bicycling laps around the island. Each lap is about seven miles so a couple laps is enough to get a minimum of exercise, but not enough to balance all the great food I am consuming. Yesterday Dean and I flew his Bonanza up to Anacortes and back. Getting home just before the evening fog rolled in. So, as you can see, I'm making great progress checking off these activities. Much to Dean's dismay, I'll be moving eastward this weekend and spending some time in Walla Walla.
THURSDAY AUGUST 12 2010,
What a great week. Relaxed a little on Monday but determined that it is seven miles around the island by bicycle so I'll be doing laps as often as I can. Wednesday several of us took the ferry over to Seattle and went to a Mariners baseball game. Today I went kayaking around Port Ludlow with my neice Delee and Allen and another friend of theirs. As I was just heading out on the kayak, I received a phone call from some friends who live in Kentucky. They thought I was at home and were calling to get the phone number of Dean, whos place I am staying at on Marrowstone Island, because they were in the area. What a surprise to soon, find a total of ten of us, having lunch on a beautiful yacht. Six of us had all been classmates in college. Among us, we live in Washington, Oregon, California, and Kentucky, but found ourselves in the same place pretty much by accident. It's been a good week so far.
SUNDAY AUGUST 8 2010,
After a couple days in Reno at Hot August Nights, I headed for central Oregon. I camped out at Gary and SueAnn Olsen's place. One day I rode my motorcycle down the hill to Salem and Independence to visit some good friends. Then on Friday, Gary, SueAnn and I took their RAZR 4-wheeler up into the mountains for a picnic lunch. We found ourselves inside a restricted fire line around a forest fire and had to use some ingenious methods to get back home. At least we didn't spend any jail time for our shenanigans but it was close, very close.

Today I find myself on Marrowstone Island on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. What a great view fron the bluff overlooking the main channel leading to Pugent Sound. Have already scheduled a kayak outing for Thursday and hope to do some serious motobiking and bicycling if weather permits.
MONDAY AUGUST 2 2010
Made it to Reno. Now will spend a couple days looking at all the classic cars. Last night I looked over an original 1965 427 Shelby Cobra. Not a replica. That car was probably worth at least a million dollars. Will enjoy the cars all day today and tonight too.
My trip that consumed all of June, 2010 is shown below --

MONDAY JUNE 28 2010,
Made the easy ride to my home in Inyokern, California. This trip is officially complete. Total distance ridden has been 10,442.1 miles.
SUNDAY JUNE 27 2010,
Took the day off from riding. Just enjoyed a little shopping around Reno and relaxing. Will head home tomorrow.
SATURDAY JUNE 26 2010,
A fun day. Rode from Salem through the hillside to Independence, Oregon. From there we found highway 99W and took it south towards Springfield, Oregon. From there we took two lane roads all the way to Reno, Nevada and made our way to Don’s house at the south end of town. The day’s mileage came to 514.7 and the grand total now sits at 10,098.8 miles with only one day of riding left for me to get home.
FRIDAY JUNE 25 2010,
Had a great day riding the rest of the North Cascades Highway. Very scenic and a great motorcycle road. Took back country two-lane roads all the way to Blain, Washington. That completes the goal that we had, the four extreme corner of the United States. Now to head home. We decided to make a fast shot down Interstate 5 to Salem, Oregon for the night. Unfortunately the term “fast” never materialized since the Friday afternoon traffic through Seattle and Olympia was stop-and-go for many miles. That really slowed us down and we arrived at Dee’s house at around eight that evening. The day’s ride came out at 536.2 so the grand total so far is 9584.1 miles.
THURSDAY JUNE 24 2010,
Left Flathead Lake by going around the south end of the lake and headed west. The entire day was spent on two lane back roads that wound their way through the mountains. Passed the rest of the way through Montana, the panhandle of Idaho and across Washington. When we stopped for the night we were on the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) in the town Twisp. Today we traveled 457.1 miles. Now our grand total is at 9047.9 miles so far.
WEDNESDAY JUNE 23 2010,
Left Wolf Point, North Dakota and made good time westward. Spent the entire day almost riding across eastern Montana. Before leaving North Dakota, we went through an area that must have been hit really hard by that rain storm we went through yesterday since they were slowing everyone down and having us pass through a flooded section of the highway in single file. Our side of the highway wasn’t too bad but the traffic coming the other way had to pass through what seemed to be a fairly deep lake that swallowed up the highway. Montana seems to go on forever but finally we rode through the southern edge of Glacier National Park and then turned south along the shore of Flathead Lake to the home of some friends. Today’s mileage came to 498.1 giving us a grand total so far of 8590.8 miles.
TUESDAY JUNE 22 2010,
A beautiful day for a ride. The expected thunder showers never materialized so the entire day was ridden under beautiful skies and relatively warm temperatures. We are expected by friends at Flathead Lake tomorrow afternoon so we have made a straight shot across Minnesota and North Dakota and have stopped for the night at Wolf Point, Montana. If all goes as planned we will arrive at tomorrows destination around four in the afternoon. Today we rode 522.1 miles and now have a total of 8092.7 miles so far for the ride.
MONDAY JUNE 21 2010,
A very interesting day today. Started out in upper Michigan in beautiful weather and headed across northern Wisconsin. At Marquette we stopped for lunch. The weather was warm and sunny so we ate at a Mexican restaurant and sat outdoors overlooking Lake Superior. As we approached Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota, the sky opened up and it just dumped on us. We made a planned stop at Aerostich Rider Wearhouse to look around and hopefully let the storm pass. We looked around but the storn didn't pass. As we left Duluth, the downpour continued for awhile. We stopped at Bemidji, Minnesota but could not find a room so we continued. Again the sky opened up and dumped on us as we approached Bagley, Minnesota. We found a room and moved our stuff off the bikes and into the room in record time. Wonder what the weather has in store for us tomorrow and beyond? Today's mileage was 434.8 with a grand total of 7570.6 so far.
SUNDAY JUNE 20 2010,
Didn't make it to Wisconsin today but will pass through there tomorrow. Came out of Canada through Sault St. Marie and finished the day at Marquette, Michigan. Beautiful weather all day and we made 410.1 miles. Total so far is at 7135.8 miles for the trip. Tomorrow we will head across the top of Wisconsin and enter Minnesota at Duluth.
SATURDAY JUNE 19 2010,
Made good time across Canada. Passed by Quebec yesterday and today we passed by Montreal, Ottawa, and ended up at Sturgeon Falls. Beautiful weather until lunch time when we rode into a rainstorm. After a stop for lunch we donned our cold weather gear because of the cool rain. Ten miles down the road the rain stopped, the sky cleared and the temperature warmed up. Off came the cold weather gear. Oh well. Hope to be in Wisconsin tomorrow night. Todays ride was 429.3 miles for a grand total so far of 6725.7 miles.
FRIDAY JUNE 18 2010,
Packed up our camp early and were on the road around 6:30 this morning. Rode up to Madawaska, the most northeastern city in the United States. From there we crossed the border into New Brunswick and crossed into yet another time zone, the Atlantic Timezone. That makes five time zones all total that we have spent time in during this trip. Now we are heading west and plan on returning to the United States at Sault St. Marie and head through Northern Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota before returning to Canada for awhile. Miles today were 410.1 for a grand total so far of 6296.4 miles.
THURSDAY JUNE 17 2010,
Left Vanessa's house this morning after breakfast. Didn't take long to ride into a rain shower. The rain lasted almost all day long and the cold forced us to put on our jacket liners to keep warm. But by the time we got into northern Maine, it cleared up and warmed up. We found a beautiful campground to camp at so for tonight we will be sleeping on the ground in tents. It is supposed to be warm and dry for the next couple days here. Tomorrow we will stop at Madawaska, the highest point in Maine, to mark the third corner of this four-corners of the U.S. ride. Then we head west, toward home, by way of Blaine, Washington. Miles travelled today was 420.0 for a total so far for the trip of 5886.3 miles.
WEDNESDAY JUNE 16 2010,
A day of relaxing. Went down to Holyoke and spent time at the mall there doing some shopping. Then visited downtown Northampten for lunch and relaxing with a book on Main Street. Don caught up to me this afternoon and after his arrival we spent some time performing maintenance on the bikes. They should be good now for the rest of the trip. Home cooked barbecue chicken and homemade pie for dinner finished a good day. My mileage today was short, just around the local area, and was 44.9 miles. That makes the trip total so far at 5466.3. Tomorrow, we head for Maine.
TUESDAY JUNE 15 2010,
Don stayed in Philadelphia for an extra day with friends while I headed towards Massachusetts. I followed back roads most of the way and travelled the Taconic Parkway it's entire length. Another beautiful area. The weather was perfect and the ride was great. I finished up the day at my daughter's house near Northampton. The miles today was 306 for a total of 5421.4 so far.
MONDAY JUNE 14 2010,
Another day of some Blue Ridge Parkway followed by travelling the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. Beautiful scenery the whole way. A lot of back roads to Philadelphia for the night. Did an oil change on the bikes. Miles today were 314 for a grand total of 5115.4.
SUNDAY JUNE 13 2010,
A day of riding the Blue Ridge Parkway again. Almost hit a squirrel but it survived. Also almost hit a skunk but missed it so I survived. Several deer were encountered but no injuries on either side. Went through a town that has some unique street names like Al Gore Lane, Purple Cow Lane, Forgotten Lane, Shangri-La Lane and Silver Bullet Lane. Using all those names in one paragraph could be interesting. Stopped in Harrisonburg, Virginia for the night. Miles ridden today was 402.4 for a total miles for the trip of 4801.4 so far.
SATURDAY JUNE 12 2010,
Enjoyed the day touring the area with friends. Made it to the top of Grandfather Mountain, the highest point along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great fun and some much needed R&R. This was the first day of rest during this trip. We will be on the road tomorrow morning again heading north. No miles ridden today.
FRIDAY JUNE 11 2010,
Fun day traveling a good part of the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound. Stopped in the mountains of North Carolina and will spend a couple nights here. Miles today were 232 for a total for the trip so far at 4399 miles.
THURSDAY JUNE 10 2010,
Fun ride today. A quick ride up to Jacksonville for a quick visit with Bruce, my nephew. It was great to see him again. Then following highway 1 all the way to Augusta, Georgia, where we met up with Sandi and John Newell from South Carolina. It was really fun to meet these nice folks and have dinner with them. Tomorrow we are heading to North Carolina for a couple days before moving on. Todays miles were 372 for a total for the trip so far at 4167 miles.
WEDNESDAY JUNE 9 2010,
Left Key West and headed north. Lots of construction along the Keys highway made the going slow. Very nice weather and we stopped near Daytona Beach for the night at the Bennetts house. Mileage today was 435.9 for a total for the trip so far at 3795.0 miles.
TUESDAY JUNE 8 2010,
Really fun day with beautiful weather the whole time. After riding through the middle of the Everglades Park, we headed south the entire length of the Florida Keys. Saw a couple "critters" in the water along the road who were only showing me their big eyeballs and a long snout above the water. Got to Key West in time to go the two blocks from our hotel to the monument marking the southernmost point in the United States to take pictures then went swimming before walking through town to Hemingway's house and other points of interest. Fantastic weather all day. Todays miles were 340.2 for a total for the trip so far at 3359.1 miles.
MONDAY JUNE 7 2010,
Headed south under cloudy skies. Soon we were into severe thunderstorms and in thunder, lightning, and pouring rain. We found refuge under an awning at a hotel for awhile and then continued on when things let up. Finished up the day in Venice, Florida. Miles today were 218.1 for a total for the trip so far at 3018.9 miles.
SUNDAY JUNE 6 2010,
Left Birmingham and headed south into the Florida panhandle. A fun ride on mostly 2-lane roads. Stopped along the Suwanee river for the night. Another day with some light rain but mostly good weather. Miles today came to 413.4 for a total for the trip so far at 2800.8 miles.
SATURDAY June 5 2010,
Another great ride. The roads are great and even the straight sections are fun since we are weaving back and forth in order to miss the armadillos and turtles on the road. Some more rain today but not too bad. Finished up in Birmingham, Alabama, where we spent the afternoon in the great Barber Motorsports Museum. After the time in the museum, I replaced the worn out rear tire on my motorcycle with a new tire that should get me through the rest of the trip. Miles today was 328.3 for a total for the trip so far at 2387.4 miles.
FRIDAY, JUNE 4 2010,
Fun day today. Finished up Texas and passed through Louisiana before stopping for the night in Mississippi. Passed through a couple rain showers in the afternoon. Did about half two-lane roads and freeway to make better time. Put a new tire on the rear of Don's bike this morning before starting out. I will put a new tire on tomorrow I suspect. Rode 428.2 miles today for a total for the trip so far at 2059.1 miles.
THURSDAY, JUNE 3 2010
No Internet tonight so just a short note. Am just east of Austin, Texas. Great day of riding. Going to do a tire change on Don's bike in the morning. Then off to Louisiana and Mississippi. Got into some rain at the end of the day but not too bad. Rode 500.5 miles today for a total for the trip so far at 1630.9 miles.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2 2010
Took mainly two lane roads in the morning and some freeway this afternoon. Made good time and ended up in Van Horn, Texas. Saw lots and lots of border patrol officers. They are doing the best they can. Getting hot here. We will see how long the great weather will stay with us. Rode 532.2 miles today for a total for the trip so far at 1130.4 miles.
TUESDAY, JUNE 1 2010
A good start to an epic ride. Don Simone arrived at my house Monday afternoon and we left my house in Inyokern, California this morning. Made good time to San Ysidro, California, right across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. Then headed east. The ride from my house started out warm but near Marieta, we stopped to put on warm liners under our riding gear. After leaving San Ysidro, it warmed up quickly and the warm liners were soon in the duffle bags. Got hotter and hotter after the Yuma area. We are now stopped for the night in Casa Grande, Arizona. Rode 598.2 miles today.

My Last Trip to Cabo San Lucas in April 2010 --

THURSDAY, April 15
Got an early start from San Quintin. Two more Army checkpoints today. Had a snack in Ensenada at a gas stop. Made it through the border crossing quick and easy. Stopped in San Diego for lunch and had a fast ride home. Arrived home at 5:30 this afternoon. Now to get some sleep ... zzzzzzz
WEDNESDAY, April 14
Today we passed through three Army checkpoints, but other than that, it was an uneventful day. As we pulled into San Ignacio for breakfast we passed two riders on small BMW's just leaving town. When we stopped for gas at Guerrero Negro those two riders were there. They turned out to be two ladies from Vancouver Island who were riding together and had also been to Cabo San Lucas and were now heading home. We didn't see them again during our ride home. Stopped at our newest hidden secret hotel near San Quintin for the night. What a beautiful place!
TUESDAY, April 13
Sorry to be leaving Cabo San Lucas today. Stopped at the Hotel California in Todos Santos for another great breakfast. The ride to Mulege was fun and with great weather. Passed through two Army checkpoints today and came around one corner to find a herd of goats standing in the road. Always something new. Don and I were the only people staying at Hotel Hacienda tonight.
MONDAY, April 12
A lazy day! Slept in then went to Taco Rio for a huge breakfast (brunch). Mexican style eggs, fresh tropical fruit, Mexican sweetbread, fresh orange juice and of course rice and beans. Soon heading to the pool to relax and contemplate the rockpile between my ears.
SUNDAY, April 11
Lots of hiking today. All the way to the north side of town to buy a tortilla press. Then a hike over the rocks all the way south to Land's End. I could easily live here.
SATURDAY, April 10
Started out the day with plans to hike to Land´s End. The path I usually take is a route over a lot of rocks but also skirts the Pacific Ocean and you have to run, between waves, across an isolated small beach. This morning the tide was extremely high and the way was too dangerous. So, I walked back to town and then headed in the opposite direction up the the blown glass factory for a visit. Then a couple hours of reading by the pool. Now, the big decision for the day -- where to eat dinner. These tough decisions just complicate my life too much. :-)
FRIDAY, APRIL 9
Fun day with lots of twisty roads. Made an early arrival to Cabo San Lucas. Will soon be reading a book at the side of the pool before another great meal in Mexico.
THURSDAY, April 8
Great ride down to Loreto. The hills are alive in Baja. No, not with bullets-a-blazing, but with wildflowers-a-blooming.
WEDNESDAY, April 7
Good day. Fantastic weather. Warm. Made it from home to Mama Espinosa's in El Rosario.

Death Valley

This trip was to the Death Valley area where I did some exploring on January 30, 2010.

My trip to Yuma and area --

This trip was a camping trip in the Yuma area where I was doing some motorcycling, bicycling and fishing.

This map shows where I have been. Enjoy.

Saturday 23 January

I'm home! Tried to come up U.S. Highway 95 all the way to Needles but found the highway closed north of Parker, Arizona, due to storm damage. So I stayed in Arizona all the way to I-40. Then followed that to Barstow and finally home. Didn't lose much time with the detour. A good trip but it wasn't long enough. Next time I'll plan more time for the Yuma area. There is just so much to see and do there.

Friday 22 January

Today is sunny and beautiful again. T-shirts and shorts once again. Think I'll head home tomorrow. Will have to find an interesting route home this time.

Thursday 21 January

Ok. Time to hollar "uncle". 24 hours of heavy downpour and high winds today. Was a good day to stay in the trailer and watch movies all day long. The interesting part was when the weather service issued a tornado warning for right where I was. They also said not to seek shelter in mobile homes (trailers?) or vehicles. Ah, ok. Just turn up the volume on the TV so I don't hear the oncoming tornados I guess. ;-)

Wednesday 20 January

Another beautiful warm, cloudless morning. Seems to only rain at night here. Rained hard last night but today is T-shirt and shorts weather. Do I really have to go home some day?

Tuesday 19 January

Woke up to beautiful cloudless skies this morning. Out hiking in the hills now and cloudy. May rain later. Probably stay in this evening and watch TV or a movie.

Monday 18 January

It rained a little last night. Today is cloudy but no rain. Not a bad day after all. Will stay close to camp today and do a little hiking in the area.

Sunday 17 January

Rode north back to the States. Visited Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, then up to Gila Bend and then west to Yuma. Got back to camp in time for the nightly campfire with my neighbors. Lizzie (my cat) was glad to see me return to camp.

Saturday 16 January

Beautiful ride down to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) today. Will spend at least one night here on the beach. Maybe two nights. Mexico is so beautiful!

Friday 15 January

Wow, another great day. Wind has moderated and is just a gentle breeze with temps in the mid 70's. Rode my motorcycle the five miles to the library at the Yuma Proving Grounds to check my email and will ride to town next for a little shopping. Then a bicycle ride until dusk. The nightly campfires have been fun and meeting some new people all the time.

Thursday 14 January

Another warm (mid 70's) day just outside of Yuma. Wind came up last night but is moderating now. I took a walk and am right now sitting on top of a local mountain. Great view.

Wednesday 13 January

Well, I drove to town (Yuma) to do some shopping and check my email. I'll be making dinner for SueAnn and Gary who will be coming up to my campsite for dinner tonight. Weather has been great - mid 70's every day so far.

Tuesday 12 January

After spending Tuesday morning in Quartzsite wandering through all the vendors, I finally arrived at my campsite north of Yuma about noon. After setting up camp I was surprised to get a visit from SueAnn and Gary Olsen from Bend, Oregon. Seems they are camping just east of town so I rode my motorcycle down to their camp in the evening and had dinner with them.

Monday 11 January

I had a long day. Got a late start and made numerous stops along the way but spent the night in Quartzsite. Now to do some shopping and head down towards Yuma.

Monday 11 January 2010

Well, I'm packed and ready to go. I'll be adding a few comments from time to time. So log on every now and then and travel with me.
